| Elizabeth I is often considered as
one of the most powerful women of all time.
Born in 1533 as the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife
Anne Boleyn, she succeeded to the throne in 1558, after the deaths
of her brother, Edward VI, and her sister, Mary I. At that point,
no one would have predicted that the kingdom stood on the threshold
of an extraordinary reign.
Elizabeth I served England well in all but one respect: the ‘Virgin
Queen’ never married and left behind no Tudor heir. As a result,
James I, a Stuart, gained the throne at her death in 1603.
