Despite the fact that the English population became increasingly literate between 1500 and 1700 most people in London didn't buy books but preferred to go to the theatre in order to see Shakespeare's plays.

Today, Shakespeare's works are as much read as performed and watched. Still, it is important to bear the original purpose of these plays in mind when we read Shakespeare in the twentyfirst century.
