In the twentieth century, the theatre has been challenged by the movies.

One of the latest projects is a film version of Shakespeare's drama The Merchant of Venice by director Michael Radford, with Al Pacino as Shylock, newcomer Lynn Collins as Portia, Jeremy Irons (replacing Ian McKellen) as Antonio and Joseph Fiennes as Bassanio.
